Company's new method patent provides protection for mobile commerce business models

(PARIS - 21 May 2002)
- Upaid, a leading provider of a mobile payment authentication service to mobile operators, banks and merchants today announced that the US Patent and Trademark Office has published the company's new m-commerce patent. The new award, US patent 6,381,316, extends Upaid's patent coverage from prepaid and pre-authorised m-commerce transactions to any form of pre- and postpaid m-commerce transactions made using any device and end-user account, including credit, debit, cash, prepaid and e-wallet accounts. The patent also protects real-time and batch processing of settlement data for m-commerce transactions enabled across multiple networks.

Upaid promotes an open licensing strategy and uses its broad intellectual property rights to promote the adoption of its platform for real-time rating and payment settlement processing of mobile payment services. The company seeks to maximise the number of licensed users of its service and patents through partnerships with software developers, systems integrators, mobile operators and financial services providers.

The award of Upaid's m-Commerce patent follows examination of over 90 pieces of related patented prior art by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The new independent method claim and 29 supporting dependent claims brings Upaid's total patent claims to 75, of which 4 independent method claims, 2 independent product platform claims and 69 supporting dependent claims.
